It has been quite a while since we have run a contest here at the RHS. And, well, it's about time we put an end to this drought. We are happy to announce the latest RHS Contest...
WRITE A HAIKU ABOUT CHRISTY
For those who are not familiar with what a haiku is, it's a form of poetry. Don't let the word "poetry" scare you away from this...it doesn't have to rhyme, and a haiku is not a long poem. Haiku has its origins in Japan (in Japanese, the word "haiku" means "playful verse"), and it contains only three lines: the first line must contain five syllables, the second line must contain seven syllables, and the third line must contain five syllables. It doesn't sound like much, but you'd be surprised what a person can create within those parameters. Here's a couple of examples of haiku poetry, both by a writer named Donna Brock...
A RAINBOW
Curving up, then down.
Meeting blue sky and green earth
Melding sun and rain.
THE ROSE
The red blossom bends
and drips its dew to the ground.
Like a tear it falls
A lot of contemporary haiku strays from the strict syllable count mentioned above, but we'd like to see you keep with the traditional structure of 5-7-5 syllables.
So...write a haiku about or inspired by Christy. It could be about something you saw her do in the ring, something about her personality, her music, her singing voice...whatever inspires you. All we ask is that you not get too creepy, if you know what we mean...don't get too explicit or too strong with your emotions. Keep it tasteful, in other words...
And, of course, no contest would be complete without a prize, and here it is...
An 8x10 copy of Christy's Playboy cover, signed by Christy herself, and personalized by Christy with the term "RHS ROCKS." (To clarify, this is not the actual Playboy magazine...it's a copy of the cover). Joey B. acquire this autograph at Christy's appearance in Queens back in October, 2010.
If you'd like to take part in this contest, please respond to this thread. DO NOT POST YOUR ENTRIES HERE. We will tell you the entry guidelines once we know how many entrants we have. We will leave this sign-up thread open for five days, until February 11, 2011 at 10: PM, NYC time. There's no graphic-making involved here, and no long writing, so let's get a good turnout for this one...
